What Is ERISA?
The Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (ERISA) is a federal law that sets minimum standards for most voluntarily established retirement and health plans to provide protection to individuals in these types of plans.
ERISA only affects disability insurance benefits that are sponsored by an employer as part of a group employee benefit package. However, there are exceptions.
ERISA does not cover disability plans established or maintained by government entities or churches for their employees.
